Recovery Orientation as a Foundation of Practice
Overview
In this workshop, participants will explore recovery-oriented practice and how it shapes work with clients. Having a recovery-oriented approach emphasizes the importance of aligning treatment with what is meaningful to the individual, rather than solely focusing on symptoms and clinical interventions. This shift challenges traditional clinical goals and promotes a more person-centered approach to care. Participants will begin by examining the fundamental difference between clinical recovery—which focuses on symptom remediation—and personal recovery, which is about helping individuals define and pursue a fulfilling life based on their hopes, dreams, and personal goals. When mental health professionals center their work around a client’s vision of recovery, they can create a partnership where clients feel respected, empowered, and hopeful for the future.
