Overview

Opioid use disorder (OUD) continues to represent a significant public health crisis in the United States, with substantial morbidity and mortality driven by overdose and limited access to effective treatment. Traditional clinic-based models of care often fail to engage individuals who face structural, social, and logistical barriers to treatment access. Field-based delivery of medications for opioid use disorder (mOUD) represents an emerging, evidence-based approach to expanding access to recovery-oriented resources and improving social service engagement among high-risk populations. This training will provide a comprehensive overview of mOUD implementation in field-based settings, including street medicine, outreach teams, and mobile health programs. Behavioral l health providers will review the pharmacologic foundations of mOUD, patient selection considerations, and harm reduction principles. Emphasis will be placed on practical strategies for initiating and maintaining treatment in non-traditional environments while addressing safety, regulatory, and ethical considerations for field-based medication assisted treatment.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the pharmacologic mechanisms, indications, and comparative effectiveness of FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone)
  • Analyze key barriers and facilitators for behavioral health providers who are supporting prescribing providers to consider when implementing field-based mOUD programs in underserved and high-risk populations
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to support prescribing providers and consumers in initiating and managing mOUD in non-traditional, field-based clinical settings
  • Discuss harm reduction principles and patient-centered approaches that enhance engagement and retention in mOUD treatment
